Green or wet season: November to April
Light weight clothing (cotton shorts/skirts/sarongs and cotton shirts) the lighter the better, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, small beach towel and swimmers, umbrella or if you have it tropical weight wet weather gear (normal wet weather gear is too heavy for the tropics), walking sandals or shoes you can wear in water.
Cool or dry season: May to October
Shorts for day wear and jeans/trousers for night plus a jumper/jacket, it can get cool in the evenings(you will be surprised just how cool it can get), small beach towel and swimmers, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, walking sandals or shoes, umbrella just in case (after all it is the wet tropics)
We recommend that you stay at least three to four days or longer if you can, to get a real feel for the area and to touch on some of the special things to do. Here are just a few of the things to do whilst staying:
A day trip to the outer reef either diving or snorkelling, some of north Queensland’s best diving and snorkelling companies operate from Port Douglas just 15 minutes away.
A morning or afternoon spent with the local aboriginals taking a guided walk, either in the rainforest or a food gathering walk along the local foreshore ending with the cooking of what you have gathered. 5 minutes from us.
Spend some time at the Rainforest Habitat to see our fantastic birdlife (10 minutes from us) or get up close to a crocodile at Hartley's creek crocodile farm. (20 minutes from us)
A day trip to Cape Tribulation:For guests with only limited time, a day trip to the cape is perfect. We have a very good map on which we mark all the really good things to do, so you don't have to wade through all the not so good things first.
A
day walking and swimming in Mossman Gorge National Park.
Take a drive to the Atherton Tablelands to sample some of the local produce eg coffee, tea, cheese, fruit and vegetables and local wines. (a day trip)
If you are here on a Sunday, the Port Douglas Markets are not to be missed.
Spend a day relaxing by the pool or on one of the many beaches in the local area.
Go horse riding, parasailing, bird watching, reef or estuary fishing, hang gliding, jet skiing
The best time of the year for the rarer of our feathered friends is from the beginning of September and on through the hot wet months of summer. The trees around our house ring with the calls of upwards of two dozen different species of birds. It is not uncommon to spot 30 or more species of birds in one day from the main guest verandah. You don't have to walk for miles to achieve this either, just a short walk through the house and out into the garden, is as far as you need go. For shear quantities of birds, then the winter months are sure to impress.
Some of our resident flock are as follows:
Pacific Baza
rainbow bee-eater
scaly breasted & rainbow lorikeets
scrub turkeys
orange footed scrub fowl
sun bird
Macleay's honey eater
friar birds
mistletoe bird
spangled drongo
butcher bird
varied triller
lovely wren
emerald dove
brown cuckoo dove
silver eye
rainforest kingfisher
kookaburra
yellow spotted & graceful honey eaters
The list goes on and on. To date we have 95 species of birds that visit our property during a twelve month period
Allow us to send you on a self drive tour or an early morning walk in the national park. We can also arrange for Del Richards from Fine Feather Tours to collect you from our door and show you some of the more out of the way places.
Birding is good all year round, with an increase in migrant bird numbers starting in September and continuing on through to May. With the greatest numbers of resident birds and migrants coming together from around March on through until June/ July. It is not unusual to sight up to 100 species of birds on a full day birding tour. During the winter months our resident birds remain and are joined by a mini migration from the mountains to the west of us.

Chris and Mandy met and married in tropical north Queensland in the late 1980’s and have both worked extensively in the local tourist industry. Chris hales from Melton Mowbray, a small town near Leicester and having finished university at Girton College in Cambridge, made the move to far north Queensland. Mandy from Brisbane originally, was transferred to Cairns with Ansett airlines and couldn’t have thought of a better move to make.
For many years Chris worked as a diving instructor, while Mandy ran tourism retail outlets. We have lived here nearly 20 years now (11 of which have been spent running the bed and breakfast) and now have two lovely daughters and share our home with a small dog named Angel.
Chris has a masters in geography and is also a diving instructor, who turned a hobby of diving into a job and now works for the Queensland government developing and administering diving safety regulations. In this capacity Chris gets to dive along the north Queensland coast regularly and has a wealth of knowledge on the best diving and snorkelling sites in the far north.
Mandy is a qualified library technician who moved into tourism and retail when library life proved just a little too quiet, (it does mean however that we do have a fantastic selection of books as I can never throw a book away). Since moving to our current house, Bird watching has become a favourite past time (hard not too when nearly 100 species of birds are seen on our block in a 12 month period).
A current bird list is always on display on our main verandah
All the photos used on this website, except for the one shot taken looking at the suspension bridge at Mossman gorge, were taken by either Chris or Mandy or by guests who were staying in house. We hope you like them.
Welcome to our picture gallery. Please take a tour through our tropical north Queensland home surrounded by incredible flora and fauna in a perfect relaxing location.
