Gum Tree Nature Retreat Abbey's breakfast...

Northern Beaches Cairns - North Queensland  - Australia

Excitingly different – holiday accommodation for the Nature Enthusiast at the Northern Beaches of Cairns. Peaceful & secluded – yet close to everything!

Gum Tree Nature Retreat is located 0.8 kilometers from the Cook Highway turnoff at “Wild World”
near Palm Cove. It is hidden away on over 2 acres of bushland on a hillside with towering gum and paperbark trees and with views to the ocean. From here you are only a few minutes drive to the busy beach suburb of Palm Cove (3 km) with its sandy beach, lifeguards on duty and a stinger enclosure during the summer months. There are many coffee shops and restaurants here that make your day at the beach an even better experience. Fishing off the jetty is a popular pastime and many reef trips can the boarded here also.

Gum Tree is located approx 22 km from Cairns CBD and 20 km from the international airport, a drive that usually takes no longer than 25 minutes along the Captain Cook Highway, through the canefields and past the impressive Kuranda and MacAlister Ranges.

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Gum Tree was named by the striking tall gum trees surrounding the home and framing the vista out to the ocean and forested ridges. The aim of the owners was to nestle into the environment without radical clearing of vegetation maintaining the habitat of the wildlife and inviting them close to the house. Meanwhile a lot of additional native plants have prospered and together with the birdbath offer a ready food supply for a variety of birds that can be easily observed from the deck. Occasionally you can spot goannas, wallabies and striped possum. At night time you can hear the calls of curlews, scrub fowl and owls. One of the most stunning spectacles is watching the full moon come up over the ocean – it is just an indescribable experience. Bring your binoculars for some birdwatching!

YOUR HOSTS

Markus and Andrea have been living in Cairns since 1987 and have loved every moment of it. “Gum Tree” has been our dream that was starting to take on shape in late 1999. Most of the work was done by Markus who has been involved in the building industry for many years. “The environment and the views just took our breath away from the moment we saw this block”. Having travelled extensively in Australia they wanted to offer an alternative style accommodation. Private and peaceful, where you can retire to after a long day exploring the local sights, enjoy the many day trips and partake in the Hustle and Bustle of the busy tourist areas. We welcome your to share our experience with us and will try to make your stay a pleasant and memorable experience. Of course word of mouth is our best promotion – please tell your friends about Gum Tree and we hope to be able to see you soon.
